Nafi Thiam combines hurdles with high jump in Liège

On Wednesday 29 June at the 20th edition of the Meeting International d?Athlétisme de la Province de Liège, Nafi Thiam will compete in two events. Spectators at the Province Naimette Arena will be able to cheer on the two-time Olympic Heptathlon Champion running the 100 metres hurdles and doing the high jump.

Elise Vanderelst: ‘Hoping to make the semi-final in Tokyo’

For Nafi Thiam and Elise Vanderelst the 19th Meeting International d’Athlétisme de la Province the Liège was an important test in view of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Thiam grabbed the opportunity of the 100m hurdles to complete her last preparatory competition, before travelling to Tokyo to defend her Olympic heptathlon title. Vanderelst improved her speed in the 800m and is hoping to reach the 1500m semi-finals in Tokyo.

Less than one month before the start of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the 19th Meeting International de la Province de Liège offered up athletics from the top shelf. Despite the rainy and rather cold weather conditions, our Belgian stars managed to stand out at the Stade Naimette-Xhovémont. Olympic Champion Nafi Thiam and European Indoor Champion Elise Vanderelst showed their best sides. The South-African superstar Caster Semenya improved her PR in the 5000m.

Double Olympic Champion Caster Semenya has also signed up for Liège.

Clarence Munyai has arrived

Apart from a slight breeze, the conditions for the 18th edition of the Meeting International de la Province de Liège in the Naimette-Xhovémont stadium were practically ideal. The new star of sprinting, South-African Clarence Munyai, set the best world time this year in the 300 metres. Additionally, two meeting records were beaten: 400 metres (photo) and 3000 metres steeplechase, both by women.

On Wednesday, 21-year-old Munyai is one of the main draws at the 18th Meeting International d’Athlétisme de la Province de Liège. Since last Sunday, Anne Zagré can prepare the next weeks of the competition with confidence. The 29-year-old Belgian record-holder in the 100m hurdles ran the world Championship minimum at La Chaux-de-Fonds and is currently preparing for the Meeting International d’Athlétisme de la Province de Liège.
